Morning Sickness Drug Ondansetron safe and effective

A safe and effective way to treat morning sickness without risking the baby´s health is important information to have for many mothers to be.

Ondansetron the most commonly prescribed anti-nausea medication in the US. Is used to treat severe morning sickness during pregnancy. Since it´s so commonly prescribed the safety concerns are a key factor and was therefore studied in a large cohort study(risk factor analysis) by Pasternak et al. published in the New England journal of medicine.

The study was based on statistical data of over 600 000 pregnancies in Denmark between 2004 and 2011. The researchers compared women that had been prescribed Ondansetron during the first trimester, before the 37th week of pregnancy and at any time during the pregnancy to women that were not exposed to Ondansetron during the pregnancy. The different groups were then compared statistically to determine if an increased risk was present.

The researchers conclude that there is no serious danger for adverse fetal outcome such as stillbirth, abortion, major birth defects, preterm delivery low birth weight or small size when being prescribed Ondansetron during the pregnancy.

The outcome of the study should help ease the anxiety of pregnant women affected by morning sickness and that are hesitant to use prescription drugs during pregnancy for a fear of losing their unborn babies.
